So my review of it is up on my own blog. Topic: Mobile GamingPosted: 2:13 pm by GeneralChangKCВ  Rating: 0 0 ReplyPermalink Mark as Offensive Sunday, April 06, 2008Prince goes back to beginning, lost original charmYou have been dumped in a prison. Your beloved will be married off in 60 minutes or put to death. Can you break out and save her from "fate worse than death (tm)" in time to live happily ever after? Thus is the premise behind the classic: Prince of Persia. And the prince is one athletic fellow... You must explore the prison grounds without running into a guard to obtain your weapon, then fight enemies, make lots of jumps without falling, fight bosses, and eventually, defeat the UBG and win. On the cellphone, Gameloft adapted this old classic to the mobile platform, and added a few enhancements such as coins and "butterfly" in order to give you hints on where to go next. You can also find the level map at certain location within the level itself. Combat, in this case, turns out to be way too simple: just block. Block is 100% effective, and you can keep it up forever. As soon as you block enemy attack, you counterattack, and you'll usually score a hit. Then immediately go back to BLOCK. Do that a couple times, and he's toast. This works on EVERYBODY, except the UBG (that's Ultimate Bad Guy, the end boss) Can you finish within the 60 minutes deadline? I have no idea how fast you can move, but I got nowhere CLOSE, and remember, while you can't really "die" in this game, deaths means wasted time. Finally, the controls are VERY twitchy... Sometimes you can do the extra-far jump, and sometimes, you can't. This makes the super-long jumps required in the final levels VERY frustrating, as you just keep dying, and dying, and dying while you try to find the right pixel to jump from without falling off and so on. On the other hand, the graphics, the sounds, and so on all looks retro enough, yet updated for the current hardware. And the old charm is there... sort of. Guess you'll just have to try it and see if it still charms you the way the original did. Finished playing it in fact, and knew it was released a while back. It's NOT BAD, as it does have the FF7 flavor, but it's not that much of a "game", so to speak, due to schizo controls and viewpoints. This game would qualify for the longest title ever for a mobile game... Technically, it's Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus -- Lost Episode, which is sort of a prequel to the FF7: Dirge of Cerberus on the consoles. You are Valentine, a gunslinger. You've been battling DeepGround, a terrorist organization which wants to "cleanse" the world. In the beginning, you need to get to a castle where some of the mysteries will be revealed. Except your heli was attacked by gargoyles. The pilot's gone, and you need to shoot the gargoyles off before they overwhelm you. Valentine was a minor character in FF7, but he gets his own game here, and there's a LOT of cutscenes here and there, including girlfriend Lucrecia, whose research may be the key to all this. Valentine, at times, can turn himself into Gallian Beast, a big bad werewolf that shoots fireballs. Figure that out. Any way, you, as yourself, have three guns, but you may not always have bullets for the other two. Your regular pistol has 18 rounds, but you fire 3-round bursts, so it may as well count as 6 shots. Your submachine gun, called Griffon, holds about 32 rounds, but it figures on auto, so you'll empty the magazine really quickly, and those rounds are not exactly easy to come by. Finally, the Hydra is your sniper rifle, perfect for one shot kills. Occasionally you run into a "fixed heavy MG" which are used on enemy helicopters and sometimes, bosses. And of course, the Gallian Beast fireball does a lot of damage as well, but the duration as Galian beast is limited, so you better make use of it carefully. You do get a "circle" when enemies show up, in case you're facing the wrong way. You can then turn toward the enemy and engage with any of your weapons. There are also 'spells' and items that can help you in varous ways, from extra ammo or transform points where you can change into the Gallian Beast. The game's main problem is the camera. While in exploration mode, you are in third-person. However, the view is locked into N-S-E-W compass directions. If you watn to pan left and or, you turn your character to face in the direction you want, then you wait for a few seconds while the third-person camera pans over. It's weird When there's enemies nearby you switch into first person view, where a cross-hair with auto-aim moves onto the nearest enemy, then you decide what to shoot the enemy with, and how many shots. Simple? Yes. Effective? Well, it's a bit schizo, but it seems to work well enough. The levels are true 3D, and you can move Vincent Valentine up and down ladders (move to ladder, then 'action') and there's quite a few 3D cutscenes as well. Most of the baddies in FF7 makes a cameo here, including Rosso (in fact, she's a boss here), Nero (cameo only, but brings forth Arachnobot as the final boss), among others. You start with gargoyles and mutant dogs, and graduate to DeepGround soldiers, DeepGround helicopters, and eventualy, the bosses. All in all, this is a pretty amazing looking game for the cellphone, and it has a FF "feel" to it. However, the schizo view / control scheme that makes this game a semi-FPS doesn't help that much, though at least it is playable, but feels as if you're playing a movie with occasional shooting portions, instead of a game with cutscenes. This is so old skool!Turok Mobile is an oddity in mobile games... It is so retro, yet it lacks the charm of a retro title. Add to that twitchy controls and nasty AI, and you have a game that's both annoying and not that rewarding, a deadly combination. You play the namesake, Turok, and you're after General Kane, who basically decided to be a bad guy instead. Your squad was shipped in to check out the General's lair, but before you can land, your ship was shot down, and crew scattered all over on a planet full of dinos. Fortunately, you can "cloak" and fade into the ground, as well as fight a lot of bad guys. If you can stay still for a while, your health will regen, which is good. And you can perform silent kills by sneaking behind bad guys. The problem is this is PURE 2D, and VERY unforgiving. You need to go down one level, so what's your instinctive reaction? Down? No. That's "cloak". You need to walk off the edge, then Turok does a "hang from ledge". You that direction again, THEN he drops to the next floor. Oh, and don't "jump" instead. If you drop more than one level, you die, and that means you get to restart from last "checkpoint". Each level have various "medals" you can earn, like "killer" (killing every bad guy), "sneaker" (not killing anything, mainly by moving and cloaking), and so on. You'll have to explore every bit of the level to get some of these awards. The AI is brutal. If an enemy has you in sight, you cannot cloak (okay), but even if you move so enemy's off the screen, and presumably out of sight, you STILL can't cloak. In other words, if he sees you, either he dies, or you die. You can't try to get away and hide, and hope he goes away. :P If he's merely curious (yellow exclamation), then he'll look. If he's full alert (red exclamation) he'll chase you to death, no more hiding. So the game turns into basically one ambush after another, as you figure out what's the best way to go through the level. Some enemies with heavy guns are very difficult to kill (unless you do the rear choke), some of them come in PAIRS and you need to time it so you can kill one first. If you goof up... restart from last checkpoint. Yes, you do fight some dinos. Mostly small ones... in shooting gallery style... left, right, left, right... Boring. Then you get to fight a boss raptor, who can be "dodged", except you can't dodge if you attack, and dodging requires EXACT timing that you can't always do. Thus, I'm stuck, despite best attempts, and I was playing on the EASY level. Sheesh! Sprites look like they belong in the Ikari Warrior or Contra days, and it lacks the Contra charm with those superior weapons. Here, weapons takes prolong bursts to kill an enemy. All in all, Turok feels like an also-ran among the fresh contenders, and can't capitalize much on the existing fan base, as it lacks the charm the series had. Thus, it is a rather LOUSY title, painstakingly precise attacks, and little reward for executions. Best avoided.
